WHO I AM
Dr Andrew Mark Tze Liang Choong 鍾持良
Vascular, Endovascular, Venous & Aortic Surgeon
A Personal Introduction
I am a vascular, endovascular and aortic surgeon in Singapore, and the founding surgeon of the Asian Aortic and Vascular Centre. My work spans arterial, venous and complex aortic disease, with a practice built on evidence-based medicine, precision, and patient-centred care.
My journey in vascular surgery has taken me across the UK, Australia and Singapore, and I remain committed to advancing the specialty through clinical care, teaching, research and international collaboration.
Current Roles and Clinical Leadership
I currently practise as a vascular, endovascular and aortic surgeon at the Asian Aortic and Vascular Centre.
Previously, I served as:
Senior Consultant, National University Heart Centre Singapore (NUHCS)
Associate Professor of Surgery, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore
These roles shaped my approach to complex vascular care and my belief in combining technical excellence with thoughtful communication.
Training in the UK and Australia
I graduated from Imperial College London in 2003 and entered higher vascular surgical training in 2008 through the St Mary’s Hospital / North West Thames rotation of the London Deanery.
I further specialised as the:
International Vascular & Endovascular Fellow, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Australia
Visiting Fellow, Imperial Vascular Unit, London
During this period, I developed advanced expertise in complex thoracoabdominal aortic surgery — open, hybrid and endovascular — as well as modern venous and peripheral arterial interventions.
In 2014:
I became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England
I received my Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in the UK
I was awarded the Fellowship of the European Board of Vascular Surgery (FEBVS) Gold Medal, achieving the highest overall examination performance internationally
To date, this remains the only vascular surgery examination that formally assesses both open and endovascular surgical skill.
In 2020, I was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Warwick (United Kingdom) for original doctoral research in vascular and endovascular disease, focusing on advanced endovascular access strategies for arterial interventions.
International Clinical and Academic Appointments
Before returning to Singapore, I was a Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon at King’s College Hospital, London.
I previously served as:
Associate Lecturer, University of Queensland
Senior Lecturer, Griffith University
Associate Professor, National University of Singapore
I remain deeply committed to surgical education and mentorship, and have taught extensively in the London Postgraduate School of Surgery. My contributions to surgical training were recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh with Membership of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers.
Research, Publications and Editorial Work
Alongside clinical practice, I am an active researcher with:
100+ publications in peer-reviewed journals
Numerous book chapters and invited reviews
Over 100 international presentations
I serve as the Aortic Section Editor for Vascular and Endovascular Review and previously held leadership roles within NUHS’s Residency Research Programme.
Research remains central to how I practise, teach and make decisions with patients.
Why I Use Social Media as a Vascular Surgeon
I believe strongly in the value of social media to connect clinicians, patients and the public.
I use these platforms daily for:
patient education and advocacy
sharing evidence-based updates
research collaboration
professional exchange
improving health literacy worldwide
In a digital age, accurate medical information from credible clinicians matters more than ever.
As one colleague wrote in The Desperate Need for Physicians on Social Media — responsible engagement saves patients from misinformation and empowers better choices.

Beyond Surgery
Outside the operating theatre, I am a husband, father, son and brother before anything else. When time allows, I enjoy playing guitar, Brazilian jiu jitsu, scuba diving and snowboarding. These activities keep me grounded and reflect the values that shape my practice: discipline, balance, humility, curiousity and lifelong learning.

The Story Behind My Logo
This logo was created together with Elaine Cheong of Salt Design. I own the copyright to all artwork.

Every element reflects part of my identity and specialty:
The “AC” initials appear in red, representing my name.
The “A” forms an aortic bifurcation, symbolising my aortic surgery focus.
The “C” forms half a heart, echoing the cardiovascular system and the aortic arch.
A blue accent highlights the iliocaval confluence, emphasising the venous system — an equally important part of my work.
The brushstroke style is a nod to traditional Chinese calligraphy, and the “A” echoes the first character of my surname 鍾.
It is a visual expression of culture, craft and clinical purpose.
