Today is World Thrombosis Day. This is blood clots in 60 seconds. One in four people worldwide die from conditions caused by thrombosis. Blood clots can form silently, often in the legs as a deep vein thrombosis, or DVT. When blood slows after surgery, long flights or immobility, a clot can build up. The danger: if it breaks loose, it can travel to the lungs. That's called a pulmonary embolism. Together, DVT and PE make up venous thromboembolism, or VTE.

Blood clot awareness: know the signs and symptoms. Swelling, tenderness, being out of breath, passing out, chest pain, leg discolouration, an overdriven, racing heart. Time to call for help.
